Since beginning the campaign to demand the right to approve new landfill sites just before the last provincial election, the Demand the Right Coalition of Ontario Municipalities has grown from a few communities in Oxford County to over 140 municipal governments.
The campaign, led by Ingersoll mayor Ted Comiskey and his fellow council members, has had them presenting at many municipal council meetings across the province, and button-holing at ROMA and AMO events to convince other leaders to join them.
"Municipal leaders across the province see this as a critical issue," said Comiskey. "If the Ontario Government doesn't fulfil its promise to us, communities around the province will see new landfills popping up, without any local approval."
The total number of member municipalities is 148.
